Concept Proposal – Polar & Digital Laboratory, UCT Faculty of Engineering and Department of Oceanography, 2022

Our company was successfully awarded the bid by UCT in 2022 to produce a concept design, stacking Plan and 3D Renders for the proposed Polar & Digital Laboratory.  to develop a concept design and feasibility study for the Dermatology Centre on Anzio Road. The building is next to the library and has a complicated site on an embankment. For the proposed maximum 5x Storey building, some of the clinical functions and theatres were accommodated at basement level and consulting rooms, common areas, learning and teaching areas organised around a glazed multiple volume Atrium. The rooftop was allocated for catering and multi-purpose use with interlinking inside and outside spaces. The design resulted in a stacking plan to articulate the envisaged spatial arrangement and programme of the Dermatology Centre as outlined in the project brief. The concept design was informed by UCT guidelines, and the design proposal was in response to the site constraints. The façade treatment was a combination of a punctured masonry structure and multiple volume glazing with perforated screens as an interpretation of skin cells. This project has not yet been taken further.
