This award-winning design started out as part of the 10×10 Low Cost Housing Project by Design Indaba, the premier Expo for Design in Africa, inviting 10 local and 10 international architects to produce designs for ‘low cost houses within the S.A Govt subsidy budget of R50.000’. The Project Team led by Design Principal, Luyanda Mpahlwa was allocated the Jonker Family of 8, and set out to create an affordable and dignified housing solution.
The resulting design, features an Ecobeam timber frame structure filled with sandbags which is then plastered over and clad in part with timber boarding. This project presented the Design Team with the challenge of developing a new paradigm on low cost housing design, resolving issues of sustainable design and the biggest challenge being to meet the stringent budget. The design process followed in this project was thorough, and the result has proved to be ground-breaking.
